FAQ’s

Whether you're brand new to Pilates or returning after a break, it's natural to have questions — from how to choose the right class to what to wear or what the Reformer actually is. This FAQ section is here to guide you through everything you need to know before joining My Pilates M.O. classes, so you can feel confident, comfortable, and fully informed.

  • Pilates is a holistic approach to movement invented by Jospeh Pilates during World War 1 where he designed a series of exercises on equipment converted from Hospital beds and equipment to rehabilitate injured soldiers. This form of exercise was known as Contrology. Contrology and modern-day Pilates as we now know it, is based around the following six principles

    • Centering – According to Pilates, the centre of our body, between the lower ribs and the pubic bone, is known as the ‘powerhouse’. Pilates exercises are powered by our core, so it’s vital to bring focus to this during the exercise.

    • Concentration – By bringing full attention and commitment to the exercise, the practitioner will achieve the greatest benefit possible from each movement.

    • Control – Every movement is controlled and deliberate; no body part is left unnoticed by the mind.

    • Precision – Every movement is precise with each alignment relative to other body parts.

    • Breath – Pilates believed in the importance of using a full breath during every exercise. Therefore, co-ordinating one’s breathing with each exercise is integral to Pilates.

    • Flow – Pilates is fluid and graceful, allowing the energy of the exercise to flow through the entire body.

The dictionary defines Pilates as: a system of exercises designed to improve physical strength, flexibility, and posture, and enhance mental awareness.

    Why do Pilates

    • Enhances mobility, flexibility and agility

    • Develops co-ordination and body awareness

    • Improves natural posture and spinal alignment

    • Tones and elongates muscles without adding bulk

    • Builds core stability for abdominal & back strength

    • Improves circulation and breathing

    • Alleviates pain and tension

    • Relieves stress and boosts energy

  • The Reformer consists of a bed-like frame with a moveable carriage, springs, ropes and pulleys. To use the Reformer, you lie down, kneel or stand on the carriage and carry out a series of Pilates exercises using different spring sets and ropes to achieve particular results. There are many variations and you can acquire a range of benefits, from building strength and stability, toning up, or improving balance, developing endurance or for rehabilitation.

One particularly beneficial element to Reformer Pilates is that the Reformer is adjustable to fit to you, making it easy to align the body perfectly. The carriage provides back support whilst moving the limbs, the ropes and springs can be used to assist the movement and they also provide controllable, supported resistance and weight throughout.

The Stability chair Featuring a padded seat, foot pedal, springs and handles, you can sit, stand or lay on the chair and move through a series of exercises. The Stability Chair is especially useful for rehabilitation and Pre/Post Natal Pilates as you can remain seated to perform the exercises. This requires work to stabilise the core, but can be safer and more comfortable for those who find lying back uncomfortable.

The Pilates Cadillac is a large metal frame with a stationary bed, various springs, bars, straps and an overhead frame. The addition of the static overhead frame allows you to perform exercises hanging from the frame by supporting your own body weight using the Trapeze or “Fluffies” Unlike the Reformer, Cadillac bed is stationary, some people find this helpful when learning the exercises. The higher position of the bed also makes it easier to get on and off. The Cadillac is an excellent addition to any studio and is a really fun piece of kit.
